‘Commander’ Top of Class
Jackup GB is delighted to announce the successful completion of Classification work with Bureau Veritas of their new 600t flagship Jackup barge ‘Commander’. Following a thorough tendering process JUGB eventually chose ship build and repair specialist Damen at their yard at Vlissingen which required a relatively short inland tow from the Belgium port of Ghent.
By the time work is completed later this month (Dec 2017), total refurbishment costs will stand at around Euro 1.2mio but JUGB already has a number of interested parties looking to secure her in Q1 2018.
‘Commander’ is the only 600t Jackup of its kind in the UK which is both owned and operated by its UK owners and the company expects her to be a highly sort after barge with both UK and European construction companies.
JUGB Chairman Martin Spurr said “Completion of ‘Commander’s refurbishment is a significant milestone for Jackup GB and we are now fully able to support our clients with their construction projects offering a higher level of support. ‘Commander’ is very much one of a kind and boasts one of the fastest jacking systems of any barge. Her significant 42.5m x 20m x 4.2m dimensions provides sufficient space for [typically] a crane of 300-400t capacity and still has additional capacity for storage of heavy project materials and plant.”
When fully laden, ‘Commander’ is readily able to handle the weight both when jacking out of the water, and of equal importance, her considerable 1,600t jacking capacity allows extraction of deeply penetrated legs with ease; this being a common problem with smaller barges.
Mr. Spurr continued “The extent of the refurbishment work carried out to this vessel covers absolutely every inch of the vessel with no part of the vessel untouched. She was clearly a very well maintained vessel in her former life with GeoSea, part of the Deme Group, so our starting point was already very good. ‘Commander’ is effectively a new vessel and she will have a very long career ahead of her, continuing what has been a very strong track record in the marine construction industry”.
